Laila Lalami, Assistant Professor of Creative Writing, has been selected by the World Economic Forum (WEF) as a Young Global Leader (YGL) for 2009.

"I'm a little stunned to hear that I was selected" Lalami stated.

The Young Global Leader award is given to 200-300 of the "most distinguished young leaders below the age of 40 from around the world" states WEF. The selection committee is composed of the world's top media leaders, and chaired by Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. The selections of the two hundred recipients are carefully selected after screening the profiles of young leaders from around the world. WEF informed Lalami that her "nomination is in recognition of your record of professional accomplishments, your commitment to society and your potential to contribute to shaping the future of the world through your inspiring leadership."

As an YGL, Lalami is invited to become an active community member, where the goal is to "significantly impact world affairs and shape the global agenda" affirms WEF.

The complete list of the YGL recipients will be announced in early March.
