A multilingual symposium will be held in Mexico in July 2009 in honor of Thomas Patterson, Distinguished Professor and Department Chair of Anthropology. Patterson joined the UCR Department of Anthropology in 2000. In the past, Patterson has conducted archaeological and ethnohistorical research in Peru in the 1960s, where he now studies the political-economic, social and cultural contexts molded by nation-states; primarily focused on the United States, Peru, and Mexico.

The 53rd annual Congreso Internacional De Americanistas states that "this symposium hopes to, as well to, conquer the national barriers that after so much time, has separated the specialist of the different countries where there has manifested an intention to dismantle the archeology of society and military. We should point out that this symposium gives honor to archeologist Thomas Patterson, for his inspiration in archeology and throughout the whole American continent."

Patterson will be giving a discussion at the end of the symposium.

Patterson was honored this past April by The American Enthonological Association and the Society of The Anthropology of North America 2008 Joint conference; eleven papers, revolving around the subject of Patterson's work were presented in two sessions. Patterson was also named a Fellow in the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2005 for his contribution to economic history.
