CHASS Junior Faculty Distinguished Teaching Award 2008-09

Christina SchwenkelChristina Schwenkel, Assistant Professor of Anthropology, is the recipient of the 2009 CHASS Junior Faculty Distinguished Teaching Award. Professor Schwenkel consistently receives high teaching evaluations in both her undergraduate and graduate courses. Her scores are consistently above the mean for both her department and the college, for both small and large courses. Students' qualitative responses reinforce this picture from the aggregate data. For example, a student in her class on Anthropology of Global Media writes, "Knowledgeable, enthusiastic teacher, fascinating subject matter, very well organized and articulate.  A+!"

Her pedagogical style is both exacting in its expectations for student achievement, and sufficiently lucid and supportive to help students reach these expectations. She is rigorous and demanding and, at the same time, that she is available, constructive, honest, and compassionate. She encourages their creativity and intellectual growth; she challenges them and treats them with the respect they deserve. She is also an innovative teacher, who bundles together multimedia presentations, lectures, research papers, films, student presentations, and engagement in projects that emphasize problem solving, critical thinking, and the importance of the experiential in learning. Professor Schwenkel goes to great lengths to mentor both undergraduate and graduate students outside of her courses.
