The 2009 Doctoral Dissertation Advisor/Mentor Awards have been handed out and this year's recipients are both within the CHASS faculty! Wendy Ashmore, a Professor in the Department of Anthropology, and R. Robert Russell, a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Economics, are being recognized for their outstanding contributions to the training of advanced graduate students. As standouts among a strong pool of nominees, Professors Ashmore and Russell are being recognized by the Graduate Council and the Graduate Division at UCR for their hard work.

Professor Ashmore has been praised by her students for her engagement with them: she is said to have an "infectious enthusiasm for teaching" and has been referred to as the "principle role model" for many of them. She has also co-authored numerous articles with her graduate students and keeps in contact with them after their graduation. One student who wrote in support of her commented that, "Simply put, Wendy Ashmore is the most student-oriented professor I have ever encountered."

Like Professor Ashmore, Professor Russell also holds enduring relationships with his students after their graduation. Russell has chaired or co-chaired 14 dissertation committees and has served as a member of 32 dissertation committees at UCR. He has been involved in over half the doctoral dissertations awarded by the Department Economics since the early 1990s, and his department has noted this as "a truly remarkable achievement." His students also comment supportively on mentoring, reporting that he is "unfailingly supportive and exceedingly generous with his time."
