Pricila Chavez LaraRIVERSIDE, CA - The Department of Music at the University of California, Riverside, is pleased to announce Pricila Chavez Lara as the Presser Foundation Undergraduate Scholar Award recipient for the 2010-2011 academic year.

Presser Scholar Pricila Chavez Lara, born in Baja, Mexico, was drawn to music at an early age.  Primarily a tenor saxophone player, she also plays guitar and accordion and studies piano and cello. This fine young musician has performed in concert with the UCR Chamber Music Ensembles and the UCR Jazz Ensemble. She has a 4.0 grade point average and wants to pursue her interest in choral conducting.  She describes herself as “a first generation, low-income, immigrant Hispanic woman.”  She says, “to arrive at a university is such a great honor… when all the odds are against you.”  Her professors describe her as “driven, dedicated, and determined. She exemplifies the kind of students we have as Music majors and brings impressive musical and academic skills to our department.”

The Presser Foundation is one of the few foundations in the United States dedicated solely to the support of music and music education.  Undergraduate schools of music at accredited colleges, universities and independent institutions of higher education are designated to give the Presser Undergraduate Scholar Award annually to an outstanding music major whom they select.  The UCR Department of Music has been a designated school since 2008.  The Presser Undergraduate Scholar Award is given to one undergraduate at the end of the junior year, to be held during the senior year.  The award carries a $4,800 scholarship and the student is designated a “Presser Scholar.”  This award is prestigious and recognizes musical and academic excellence.
