UCR third year student, Hilary Low, works diligently in the White House this fall, as an intern for the Office of Presidential Correspondence. This department is proving perfect for Ms. Low, a political science/public service major, who is thriving in the Washington community.

The Office of Presidential Correspondence aids relations between the President and the American public by handling correspondence between the two. Not only does this office provide the President with samples of constituent mail each day, but it is also responsible for responding to calls, letters, and gifts, as well as running the White House Comment Line. Through her involvement in this office Ms. Low is exposed first hand to the thoughts and concerns of the American public.

On a weekly basis, the White House interns gather together for events such as off-site trips around the city, as well as a series of presentations by senior staff speakers. Low describes discussions with like-minded students, often about the fast-paced politics and legislation taking place around them in the hectic city of Washington. One of Low’s favorite parts about the internship, however, is the community service opportunities it connects her with. She has recently participated in tutoring and service projects at a local high school, and describes being inspired by her coworkers to become even more involved.

In her own words, “the opportunities I have had are irreplaceable… Everyday I learn something new about politics, the administration, and how it affects the nation as a whole − information I would not be able to soak up in a text book.”

Ms. Low’s ambition, after receiving her BA at UCR, is to attend law school or a public policy graduate school, and perhaps teach English long-term in China. She hopes to use her life to aid others through public service and proactive legislative policy.
