Search for Singers

Attention music lovers: the creative writing department is currently searching for a tenor, a baritone, and two mezzo-sopranos to participate in their new production, “We Are Not Alone,” this years’ contribution to the annual Tomas Rivera Conference. The piece was co-authored by UCR’s very own Professor Juan Felipe Herrera, recently appointed to the Academy of American Poets’ Board of Chancellors for his accomplishments in literature, and Dr. Carlos E. Cortes, emeritus professor, recipient of several prestigious book awards, and cultural advisor for children’s television series, “Dora the Explorer.”

“We Are Not Alone” is particularly close to hearts at UCR, as it is based on the life of beloved late chancellor, Dr. Thomas Rivera. Dr. Rivera’s early life was colored by his experience as a migrant farm worker with a dream, even as a boy, of becoming a writer. He succeeded in this dream, penning the novel Y no se lo tragó la tierra (also known as …and the Earth Did Not Swallow Him), which was the first ever recipient of the Quinto Sol Award, as well as countless other essays and poems. It is probable, however, that Dr. Rivera is remembered most for his outstanding dedication to higher education and student success. Complete with original score by composer Bruno Louchouarn, this one act musical promises to be well worth viewing.

The performance itself will take place on Friday, April 22 at 6:30 pm in the UCR Culver Center, 3834 Main Street, Riverside CA, 92501. Details regarding admission/ registration can be found at http://tomasriveraconference.ucr.edu/. Singers interested in honoring Dr. Rivera’s legacy and inspiring life message should contact either Professor Cortes (carlos.cortes@ucr.edu) or Professor Herrera (juanfherrera@mac.com) to make an audition appointment. Auditions will be held in Room 159 of the UC Riverside Arts Building both Wednesday evening (February 23), and Thursday morning (February 24) by appointment.
