Professor John Fischer, chairman of the philosophy department at UC Riverside, has recently been awarded a prestigious research fellowship at the University of Muenster in Germany beginning fall 2010 and lasting through spring 2014. Founded in 1780, the university boasts not only of its rich tradition and wide range of available studies, but also of a population of uniquely inquisitive minds. According to the film portrait displayed on the university’s webpage, http://www.uni-muenster.de/videoportal/video/corporatemovie.html, it is individual people—through the knowledge that they bring, the questions that they ask, and the research that they tackle—that make Muenster special.

Professor Fischer will be working at the university’s Center for Advanced Study in Bioethics. His research focuses on the theory of autonomy (the idea that we are self-governed). He spent two months in Muenster during the summer and has already given lectures there, as well as at universities in both Munich and Utrecht. Professor Fischer returned to Riverside at the beginning of the school year but plans to be a regular visitor to Muenster over the next four years of his fellowship.
