Professor Jim Isermann, of the UCR art department, has mounted two solo exhibitions this year at the Mary Boone Gallery in New York City. This past fall Isermann designed and oversaw the fabrication and installation of a site-specific intervention for Boone’s Chelsea location.  He transformed the soaring trussed-roof space by installing a standard off-the-shelf drop ceiling and five hundred custom translucent vacuum-formed styrene panels.  Isermann is recognized for his excavation of modernism and the works tendency to blur the boundaries of art, design, and architecture.

Isermann’s second exhibition, Reunion, is a selection of work from the 1980s, is mounted at Boone’s uptown 5th Street location.  The centerpiece of the exhibition, Flower Seating Group, was designed to function as gallery furniture. It is exhibited alongside an accompanying painting and ceiling panel/light with which it was originally exhibited 1986. The exhibition also includes examples of Isermann’s Hole Paintings and Shag Paintings from the late 1980s and an intricate hand-pieced fabric work from 1993. Isermann’s work from this period is unashamedly beautiful, a beauty integral to limitations and specific characteristics of fabrication.  Reunion opened on January 5th and will be open to the public through Saturday, February 4th.

The Mary Boone Gallery was founded in 1997 and was originally located in the renowned Soho 420 West Broadway address. The Gallery has maintained long held commitments to David Salle, Julian Schnable, Eric Fischl, Ross Bleckner and UCLA Professor Barbara Kruger, artists who subsequently achieved international recognition. The Gallery, now with Chelsea and 5th Avenue locations additionally functions much like a Kunsthalle or project space.  Thus allowing innovative exhibitions displaying work by such diverse artists as Douglas Gordon, Aleksandra Mir, and Carol Bove.
