John Ganim: CHASS Distinguished Research Lecture

On Wednesday April 30, 2014 Dr. John Ganim, Professor of English, will deliver the CHASS Distinguished Research Lecture, an honor awarded annually to recognize the outstanding research contribution of a CHASS faculty member.  The award recognizes the breadth and impact of Professor Ganim’s leadership in the rapidly growing specialty of medievalism, which is best displayed by his three books, Style and Consciousness in Middle English Narrative (1983), Chaucerian Theatricality (1990), and Medievalism and Orientalism (2005), the most recent of which was translated into Arabic. One of Professor Ganim’s colleagues describes him as an "unequivocal star in the field of medieval studies, yet also a popular teacher and an indefatigable champion of his colleagues and leader of his campus.”

Professor Ganim’s lecture, “The Middle Ages and Its Others,” will trace the strangely intertwined histories of the Middle Ages and the Orient as they are represented in histories of literature, architecture, and language, revealing an identity crisis in the idea of a purely Western Civilization. The definition of medieval culture, especially literature and architecture, from its earliest formulation in the Renaissance through to the twentieth century, has been a site of a contest over the idea of the West, and by definition, that which is non-Western.

The lecture will be help at 2:00 pm on Wednesday April 30 in INTS 1128.
