The National Research Council has asked UCR Associate Professor of Political Science Karthick Ramakrishnan to join their panel on “the integration of immigrants into American society.”

This panel, including 17 scholars from institutions such as Harvard, Princeton, UC Berkeley, and of course, UC Riverside, will conduct a study involving immigration and society. Their main focus will be on how integration of immigrants affects American society, and the changes that present themselves culturally and economically. They will examine how immigration relates to political participation and public opinions of immigrants, which will show the effects over time since the last study of this kind, in 1997, on which Dr. Ramakrishnan also served. “The aim of the project is to facilitate a more informed and fact-based discussion of the issues surrounding current immigration in the U.S.,” according to the national academies website.

The study will take place over a two-year range, starting January 2014 and ending January 2016. It will provide important data that stretches back through the last 40 years, and will provide some likely outcomes that could result in 2050. The Carnegie Corporation of New York, the Russell Sage Foundation, the National Science Foundation, and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security are sponsoring the study.

Dr. Ramakrishnan states that he is excited to undertake this prestigious endeavor and add it to the similar immigration related objective research in which he already specializes. His outside research is centralized around “civic participation, immigration policy, and the politics of race, ethnicity, and immigration in the United States.” He also directs the National Asian American Survey, and is currently writing a book on “the rise of state and local legislation on immigration over the past decade.”
