Long Night of Arts & Renovation – Psych Lenses

On October 12, a warm Thursday evening, hundreds gathered around Downtown Riverside to speculate the hard, dedicated work of both undergraduate and graduate students. Long Night of Arts & Innovation, first held in 2012, is an extraordinary event that occurs bi-annually. Alongside the University of California, Riverside, other local and nearby schools participate such as La Sierra University, Cal Baptist, Cal State San Bernadino, and Loma Linda University. Each college had a booth presenting various new inventions and research within their departments. This year the Psychology Department was the first department from UCR to have a booth in the Curious Kid Zone section. The booth was set up next to the Riverside Public Library’s station in the lobby of City Hall. Children sat around the table and had the option of making paper hat brains or playing with educational tangram puzzles with the help of graduate student researchers and undergraduate research assistants. The purpose was to invite parents and guardians to sign up as potential participants for research studies conducted here at UCR. The research is ongoing throughout the year and children under the age of 17 can participate.  Families are compensated for their participation.  As the breezy night continued more people became involved. Carole Meyer-Rieth, Recruitment Coordinator for UCR Child Studies, recalled that one of her personal highlights of this event was when she met a teen who shared about his botany project with her. This young man’s mother later commented that he is autistic and this was the first time he had ever discussed a school project with anyone.  Meyer-Rieth believes this event is a unique opportunity for students of all ages to share about what they are learning, and is a great way for educational institutions to engage at a personal level with the broader community.
