The Office of the Dean
The Office of the Dean is the administrative headquarters for CHASS and is home to the Dean of the College, three associate deans, four assistant deans, and a team of dedicated staff professionals in academic affairs, communications, development, facilities, finance, personnel, research, student affairs, and technology.
Associate Dean of Social Sciences: Gloria González-Rivera

Gloria González-Rivera is a professor of economics and is responsible for the faculty and academic affairs of the social sciences departments in her advisory role to the Dean. Her portfolio includes academic personnel advancement and recruitment (academic senate and non-senate appointments), allocation of the temporary budget (TAs, lecturers, associate-ins, and visiting professors), guidance and support on departmental operational matters (campus communications, regulations, space allocation, equipment, etc.), and advice and support on department climate issues. Covadonga “Cova” Lamar Prieto is an associate professor of Hispanic studies and is responsible for the Student Academic Affairs Office. In her administrative role as Associate Dean, she works closely with directors of academic advising and CHASS First to support the academic progress of every CHASS student from matriculation to graduation and post-graduation. In addition, the office is also the home for all those in undeclared and pre-business programs. The office supports students with:

Assistant Dean of Marketing and Communications: Jeff Girod

Jeff Girod creates, implements, and leads all aspects of a comprehensive marketing and communications strategy to promote CHASS programs, people, resources, and events, and advises the CHASS Dean and executive leadership team on matters related to communication and brand positioning. Supervises the CHASS Marketing and Communications Department which includes the Director of Events, Performing Arts Marketing Specialist, and CHASS Student Marketing Team. Collaborates with external partners and campus stakeholders to coordinate media coverage, enhance initiatives related to student recruitment and retention, elevate CHASS signature events, and amplify CHASS marketing, communications, advocacy, and storytelling efforts.

Eveleen Samayoa is responsible for all aspects of development (fundraising and aspects of external relations) within CHASS. These include working on behalf of students for fellowships, scholarships, mentorships, and student-focused research and travel opportunities. They also seek support for faculty and staff such as research funding, equipment, and program development. Additionally, the CHASS development team reconnects UCR alumni in the humanities, arts, and social sciences with the university and its current activities, and identifies and helps to build community partnerships.

Working closely with Associate Dean of Student Academic Affairs Covadonga Lamar Prieto and the Vice Provost and Dean of Undergraduate Studies, Ryan Lipinski provides leadership to the college’s Student Affairs unit and develops programs that enhance the student experience within CHASS, positively impacting student enrollment and facilitating our students’ progress towards their chosen degrees in the humanities, arts, and social sciences.
