The Office of the Dean

The Office of the Dean is the administrative headquarters for CHASS and is home to our interim dean, three associate deans, one assistant dean, and a team of dedicated staff members.

Juliet McMullin
Interim Dean: Juliet McMullin
(951) 827-3572

Juliet McMullin specializes in Cultural and Medical Anthropology. She is the author of The Healthy Ancestor: Embodied Inequality and the Revitalization of Native Hawaiian Health, and co-editor of the School of Advanced Research volume Confronting Cancer: Metaphors, Advocacy, and Anthropology. Professor McMullin is concerned with the production and organization of medical knowledge as they are created and constrained within a political economy of health. Within this agenda, her work falls into three broad and intersecting categories: 1) the role of narrative in knowledge production, 2) health inequalities, and 3) community-engaged research. Her new projects build on this agenda by exploring the depths of social, historical, and medical trauma. Methodologically, she continues to examine the inclusion of multiple voices in the creation of anti-oppressive research. Her current projects include the engaging community in creating comics around their cancer narratives, building a historical trauma curriculum for Native Americans and the health care providers who serve them, and her ongoing ethnography of the graphic medicine community. Professor McMullin is also the Co-Director for the Center for Health Disparities Research, Lead for the Community Engagement Core for the Center, and Director for the Medical and Health Humanities Ph.D. and MD Designated Emphasis, and the Chair for the new minor in Medical and Health Humanities Studies.
