The Department of Psychology recently adopted a new name: the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences.

This change reflects the department’s expanded reach, from the neural pathways that inspire thought to the complex stories of human growth and connection. By including 'Brain Sciences' in its name, UC Riverside joins the national discussion and demonstrates its commitment to interdisciplinary and innovative research.

“Our new name better captures the exciting breadth of what we do in our department, as our faculty and students study everything from the brain to behavior, relationships, health, emotions, and beyond,” said the new department chair Kate Sweeny.

The name change illuminates new potential and a growing mission.

• Expanded Academic and STEM Pathways: This wider identity distinguishes the department’s scientific training and opens new opportunities for STEM funding and careers beyond traditional boundaries.
• Student Recruitment: The new title attracts students interested in the intersection of brain, behavior, science, and health, reflecting the department’s inclusivity.
• National Alignment: The change aligns UCR with top universities nationwide while recognizing the department’s diverse areas of expertise.

The course catalog will continue to show classes under the well-known PSYC code, but the department is now known as PBS, marking a new era.
