Fourth-year psychology and Spanish linguistics double-major Celeste Ponce has been juggling her responsibilities since her first year as a student. As a first-generation student, Ponce was forced to spend her first few quarters at UC Riverside navigating everything on her own, including how to find help in the first place.

“It has been an experience that has flown by faster than I could have ever expected. My first few quarters were challenging, especially as a first-gen student navigating everything on my own (which later realized I wasn’t really alone). Over time, I was able to find my community, I gained confidence in myself, and was able to take advantage of the many opportunities UCR has to offer. Now looking back at my first year, I’ve been able to see all the personal and academic growth I’ve now achieved and I am so incredibly grateful for all of the challenges, opportunities, and successes that have had a part in shaping me during my time here.”

Among these opportunities, Ponce stands out through her work as a CHASS Peer Academic Advisor. Ponce’s mentorship toward other students is one of her most admirable qualities, according to academic advisor Sara Cuny.

“Celeste is our lead CHASS Peer Academic Advisor and has been an invaluable part of our team since the summer of 2023,” Cuny said. “She’s a dedicated advisor with a genuine commitment to supporting her fellow students. She has made a lasting impact in CHASS advising and we can't wait to see what she does next!”

Given her own struggles early on, Ponce encourages current undergraduates to take advantage of everything UC Riverside has to offer.

“My advice to current students is a bit simple — ask for help,” Ponce said. “There are so many resources available at UCR, and no matter what challenge you’re facing, you’re not alone. Reaching out for support can truly make a big difference in both your success and your overall experience here. Also, don’t underestimate the value of office hours. Even if you think you don’t have questions, it’s always great to introduce yourself and build relationships with your professors.”

Despite the rough start, Ponce easily found her way to a successful college experience, though not without the support of the university. Basic Needs and CAPS are both crucial tools according to Ponce, as well as the education provided by the CHASS/Transfers F1RST programs.

“CHASS and UCR have been so essential in helping me plan for the future by providing resources, and workshops, and demonstrating to me the many possibilities tied to my major,” Ponce said. “Through these opportunities, I’ve been exposed to a variety of career paths, showing me that the options are limitless.”

Ponce would like to eventually earn a Master’s degree in higher education, but currently intends to take a break from academics and instead find a job that will allow her to further develop her skills in student support and academic advising.
